Bridge Climb

We arrived at 5 Cumberland Street in The Rocks on an autumn weekday to start our skyward journey up this monstrous towering steel structure called the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Exactly 1439 steps would take us 134m above sea level on a 3.5 hour adventure of a lifetime. There are only three bridges in the world where you can experience this, and we decided to make the most of it by doing the Twilight walk to experience a Sydney sunset from high above the harbour.

After filling in the necessary declaration forms, we were alcohol-tested and went to the dressing rooms, where we suited up with special almost Star Trek-looking Bridge Suit uniforms. The suits would protect us from cold winds and rain. These went over our clothes and we were asked to remove all loose objects such as earrings, camera, hats and so on. This is to avoid any objects falling on to the traffic below. We were also given gloves, hats, extra fleece coats and raincoats.

After climbing a makeshift ladder in the BridgeClimb offices to test ourselves, we walked out onto the street to commence our first climb, starting at the Eastern Arch. After numerous gangways and ladders we finally made it up to the top of the Harbour Bridge where our guide took individual and group photos of us.

A few times we had to squeeze through some steel girders to get through to our next gangway. When the bridge was built in the 1930s there was minimal access allocated for maintenance. Little did the engineers know that almost a century later, it would be kitted out to carry adventurous tourists!

The view was breathtaking, we were even higher than the circling flocks of seagulls. We had 360 degrees view of one of the greatest harbours and one of the greatest cities.

We proceeded to make our descent via the Western Arch. Again our host was there to ensure we had enough photos! We saw the Sydney sunset, this time even more spectacular than ever.

I never thought I would enjoy myself as much as I did, maybe it was a combination of good company, my friends from the US as well as my best friend and business partner being with me, soaring above the Sydney Harbour and the special twilight time of day.
Although I have photos to remind me, the experience is so special that it can only be felt by being there.
