Melbourne - Samsung Marathon

The traditional Melbourne Marathon is back. After the success of last year's return to the original Frankston to Melbourne course the event is determined to regain it's place at the top of the Marathon calendar in Australia. The Melbourne Marathon tradition dates back to the early 1900's with the running of the Frankston to Melbourne Championship.

The Marathon was officially revived in 1978 and this year marks the 29th running of this iconic event which truly has stood the test of time. It's had various routes and various names, but is always a certainty in the Australian Marathon calendar.

Melbourne Marathon attracts competitors of all shapes and sizes, old and young from all over Australia and the globe. The wide spread demographic of competitors is evidence of the popularity of social running in Australia and the world. The 2005 Event saw over 5000 entrants but this year there is every chance the 1984 record of 7000 could be broken.

The course for the Melbourne Marathon is a popular and unique, whereby competitors run in a single direction for the full 42.195km as opposed to the lap formats. The appeal of this format for marathon runners is that with every step they can see they are closer to the finish line. The starting point is at the Mile Bridge in Frankston and finishes at a Melbourne landmark, The Arts Centre Spire. It is a road race in the true sense of the word and is a very flat, fast and has finishing straight along the gorgeous boulevard that is St Kilda Road.
