Adelaide - Wine Capital: Home of the Wineries

Wine Country

South Australia is home to some of the freshest food and finest wines in the country. About 70 per cent of Australia's exported wines come from a relatively compact area.

Adelaide is surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Whether it's a 30 minutes or one hour's drive, you're never too far from some grapevines, and the opportunity to indulge in some wine tasting! This is great wine country. The Barossa Valley is to the west of Adelaide and hosts over 40 wineries. Home of Henschke, Penfolds, Orlando and many small boutique wineries, a trip out to the vineyards is a "must do" when visiting Adelaide.

A visit to Adelaide wouldn't be complete without a short trip to Hahndorf. Located only 30 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, Hahndorf is a very small community of approximately 1,700. The settlement was established in 1839 by German Protestants from East Prussia. This little community enjoys tree-lined, flower-potted streets with typically German half-timbered houses and Lutheran steeples. Sample the meals, music, wines and beer at the same time you enjoy the fantastic German hospitality! In 1988 Hahndorf was declared a State Heritage Area. Make sure you stop and visit!

See our article on the Barossa Wine Region for a list of wineries!
