Adelaide was Australia's first free settlement, established in 1836, and it saw South Australia become a self-governing colony in 1856. It is considered one of the world's best planned cities, with a grid-based design similar to that of Brisbane. Adelaide is divided into four terraces, each named after the four major compass points. It is a city of great visual harmony and classical elegant style, set superbly beside the River Torrens between the Adelaide Hills and waters of Gulf St Vincent. Known as the city of churches, this fifth-largest city in Australia is a truly beautiful place.

The wine and festival capital of Australia, Adelaide is a place to experience the buzz, culture and convenience of a big city - without the associated frustrations of large cities. Another well known festival is the Feast Festival.  Feast is Adelaide's annual Lesbian and Gay Cultural Festival and features 23 exciting and culturally-diverse days of theatre, cabaret, film, forums, literature, dance, visual arts, tourism, sporting and community events.  This year it is happening in November from the 10th to the 25th, 2007.
